Widely regarded as the best British painter since Turner, Bacon was always striving to render what he referred to as “the brutality of fact.” He produced his portraits relatively quickly with many bearing little physical resemblance to the sitter, instead depicting more of a psychological sketch or essence. When not working, he would spend much of his time in the pubs, clubs and restaurants of Soho, drinking, gambling and arguing, leading what he referred to as his ‘gilded gutter life.’
