The classic Neo-noir Geordie gangster thriller ‘Get Carter’ has just celebrated its 50th Anniversary. It was one of Stanley Kubrick’s favourite movies and a major influence on inspiring Quentin Tarantino to become a filmmaker. Caine identified with the character of Carter as a memory of his working class upbringing explaining “Career is the dead-end product of my own environment, my childhood. I know him well. He is the ghost of Michael Caine.” He even named his dog Carter. Carter’s stand in in the movie was actually called Jack Carter in real life, and the musicians recorded the soundtrack live, direct to picture, playing along with the movie for a budget of £450.
