Chaplin’s trademark ‘Tramp’ persona came about almost spontaneously in a dressing room at Keystone Studio one rainy afternoon in Hollywood almost 110 years ago. Borrowing from other actors’ wardrobes he created an ensemble of contrasts; Fatty Arbuckle’s enormous baggy trousers, Charles Avery’s very small jacket and Ford Sterling’s size 14 shoes. These were so large that Chaplin had to wear them on the wrong feet to stop them from falling off, something which possibly helped contribute to his trademark splay-footed walk. He also borrowed a Derby hat belonging to Arbuckle’s father-in-law which was too small for his head, and finally a fake moustache created for Mark Swain which Chaplin trimmed down to toothbrush size.
