Emin’s work has always dealt with extremes of experience from sex, love and companionship, and most recently mortality. Her latest exhibition features her response to dealing with the recent life-threatening cancer which she has thankfully survived. The spindly blue-black lithographs express her pain with one piece ‘Even Saying Nothing is a Lie’ featuring the words “It was inside. Always inside”, creating a vivid expression of a tortured body playing host to a hostile invader which was attacking silently from the inside. However many of the works also communicate hope. Emin used to say that she thought with her body, now aware of her mortality, she’s facing up to the fact of life that she is still on a ‘journey to death’…as are we all…

One of the ’Sense of Self’ series celebrating the self-portraits of inspirational creatives which provide an insight into their perception of self.
